Privacy

This site has no forms, no accounts and no ads. If you allow it, Google Analytics counts page views and clicks on links to other sites. My hosting provider keeps a basic log of each request either way. This page explains what that means for you.

What’s collected

Google Analytics

Only if you choose Allow. Until then, the Google Analytics code isn’t loaded and nothing is sent to Google. After you allow it, each time you open a page, your browser sends Google the page address and title, the page you came from, your browser and device type, screen size and language, and a random ID stored in a cookie so repeat visits can be counted. Google uses your IP address to estimate your city, region and country. Google says Google Analytics 4 doesn’t log or store IP addresses. When you click a link to another site, such as LinkedIn or GitHub, the address of that link is also sent.

Server logs

The site runs on Railway. For every request, the server writes a log line with your IP address, the time, the page requested and whether it loaded. I use these logs to fix errors and keep the site running.

Email

If you email me, I receive your address and whatever you write, and so does my email provider. Nothing on this site sends email for you. The email links just open your own mail app.

The two Google Analytics cookies are only set after you choose Allow. The site sets no other cookies.

Why

I want to know which pages people read, how they found the site and which links they follow, so I can improve it. I don’t use this data for advertising and I don’t sell it.

Who receives it

Google

Receives the analytics data. Google keeps the detailed record of each page view and click for 2 months, and data tied to the random browser ID for 14 months, then deletes it. Summary totals, such as visits per month, stay in the reports. Google’s own use is covered by how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Railway

Hosts the site and stores the server logs for up to 7 days.

Me

I can see the analytics reports and the server logs. Nobody else has access to the Google Analytics property or the hosting project.

Your choices

On your first visit, a banner asks whether I can use Google Analytics. Nothing is sent to Google unless you choose Allow. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, the site treats that as Decline and doesn’t ask. The site doesn’t respond to Do Not Track signals.

You can change your choice here at any time. If you switch to Decline, the site stops sending data and deletes its Google Analytics cookies from your browser, but it can’t remove data Google has already received.

Your current choice: Needs JavaScript to show

If JavaScript is off, Google Analytics never loads. You can also block cookies for this site, use a content blocker, or install Google’s Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

Server logs are written for every visit, and you can’t turn them off. If you have questions about your data, email me at Tscholzbrennan@gmail.com.
